HORTON PLAINS

Hortain Plains National Park was declared as one of the UNESCO world heritage site in 2010.

Hortain Plains is a mountain grass land and cold forest area at altitude of 2000-2300 meters above in the central highland. The original name was Mahaeliya thenna is believed, king Ravana’s aircraft landed in Thotupala Mountain in Hortain plains. 3163hec biodiversity land area is the home of 27 endemic plants, 11 animals, 21 birds, 15 amphibious. Wildly seen animals in the area is sambar deer. 1200 meters deep cliff called Worlds end, Bakers fall and Slab fall gives the additional attraction to the area.
The Hortain plains is the head water of Mahaweli, Kelani, Walawe rivers and plains also feeds Belihul Oya, Agara Oya, Kiriketi Oya and Bagawanthalawa Oya. Mini worlds end, great worlds end and Bakers Falls are more attractive places in Hortain Planes.
