DAMBULLA

Dambulla Golden cave temple was declared as one of the UNESCO world heritage site in 1991.

Dambulla is located in the Matale District, Central Province of Sri Lanka; 148 km from north-east of Colombo. The city is famous for the largest and best preserved cave temple complex of Sri Lanka also known as the Golden Temple of Dambulla. There are over 80 caves in the surrounding and some of them have been used by the monks as meditation locations. Major attractions are spread over 5 caves, which contain the statues and the paintings

During the 1st Century BC king Walagamba hide several times in this cave when he got attack by South India, and after got his capital he turned this cave as a Temple & Image house.

Inside the five caves there are 153 Buddha statues, 3 statues of Sri Lankan kings and 4 statues of Gods & inside the cave ceilings there are painted pictures of Lord Buddha, Bodisathwas and several Gods & Goddess.
